About Envelope

Learn how Envelope combines digital envelope budgeting, checking, and debit cards to help couples, families, and individuals plan and spend with intention.

What is Envelope?

Envelope is an iOS and Android app that combines envelope budgeting with a built-in checking account and debit cards.

Why combine budgeting with a checking account?

When your budget and checking account are separate (like YNAB, Monarch, and Rocket Money) your budget depends on synced, imported, or manually entered transactions. You also have to remember to check the budgeting app before spending, which is easy to skip.

Envelope organizes the money in your checking account into digital envelopes for rent, groceries, bills, savings, and other expenses. The balances update in real time as transactions occur. With virtual cards and auto-lock, you can also choose to have a purchase declined when its envelope does not have enough money.

Many members use Envelope as their primary account by:

  • Sending paychecks through direct deposit

  • Scheduling funding for bills and goals

  • Paying with the physical card or optional per-envelope virtual cards

  • Reviewing spending and balance trends in Insights

  • Keeping longer-term money in protected savings

Envelope includes a demo mode to explore the budgeting tools before opening an account.

Why we built Envelope

Most budgeting apps sit beside your bank account. They import transactions, sort purchases into categories, and show where your money went. Those reports can be useful, but they often arrive after the spending decision has already been made.

The deeper problem is not a lack of charts. It is the disconnect between the plan you make, the account that holds your money, and the card you use at checkout.

Envelope brings those pieces together. We believe a budget should help you decide what is safe to spend while the choice is still in front of you, not just present something that looks organized at the end of the month.

How Envelope works

Your money stays in one Envelope checking account. Digital envelopes organize that balance by purpose, so you can set money aside for rent, groceries, utilities, savings, subscriptions, travel, car repairs, or anything else that matters to you.

Creating or funding a standard envelope does not open another bank account or physically transfer money into a separate account. It assigns part of your real balance to a purpose. As money comes in and transactions happen, envelope balances update so your plan stays connected to what you actually have.

What can you use Envelope for?

  • Budget together or independently. Choose an individual or joint account with shared budgets and separate debit cards.

  • Plan ahead automatically. Schedule envelope funding for bills, paydays, sinking funds, and future expenses.

  • Spend from your budget. Use physical and envelope-linked virtual debit cards for everyday purchases, subscriptions, and bills.

  • Add spending guardrails. Virtual cards and Auto-lock can decline purchases when the selected envelope lacks funds. Standard envelopes organize money without automatically blocking transactions.

Who is Envelope for?

  • Couples and families who want joint checking, separate debit cards, and one shared household budget.

  • Experienced budgeters who want less manual reconciliation and fewer account-syncing dependencies.

  • People who need spending guardrails that work at the point of purchase—not just reports after overspending.

  • Cash-envelope budgeters who want a digital system connected to real checking and debit cards.

  • Subscription-heavy households that want envelope-linked virtual cards for recurring bills, merchants, and spending categories.

Envelope is a financial technology company, not a bank. We build the app, budgeting system, and customer experience, while our partner bank, Pacific West Bank, Member FDIC, provides the built-in checking accounts and banking services. The Envelope Visa® Debit Card is issued by Pacific West Bank, N.A. pursuant to a license from Visa U.S.A. Inc.

This setup provides checking-account features—including direct deposit, debit cards, ATM access, transfers, and mobile check deposit—alongside Envelope’s budgeting tools.

Frequently asked questions

What is Envelope?

Envelope is a budgeting app with built-in checking and debit cards for individuals and families. It organizes real money into digital envelopes for bills, groceries, savings, subscriptions, and other purposes, so people can plan and control spending from the same account they use every day.

Is Envelope a bank or a budgeting app?

Envelope is both a budgeting app and a financial-technology experience for managing a checking account, but Envelope itself is not a bank. Banking services are provided by Pacific West Bank, Member FDIC. Envelope provides the app, digital-envelope budgeting system, cards, and money-management experience.

How is Envelope different from YNAB, Monarch, and Copilot?

YNAB, Monarch, and Copilot are budgeting or personal-finance apps that generally connect to financial accounts held elsewhere. Envelope includes built-in checking and debit cards, so the budget is connected directly to the account and cards used for spending. This can reduce manual reconciliation and dependence on syncing a separate checking account.

How is Envelope different from Goodbudget or physical cash envelopes?

Envelope applies the envelope-budgeting method to real money held in a checking account. Unlike physical cash envelopes, it supports online purchases, direct deposit, transfers, physical debit cards, and virtual cards. Unlike a budget-only digital envelope system such as Goodbudget, Envelope connects the budgeting method to built-in checking and card spending.

Can couples and families use Envelope together?

Yes. Envelope offers joint accounts for two account owners as well as individual accounts. Joint account owners share the household budget and transaction activity, can organize money into envelopes together, and receive their own physical debit cards.

Can Envelope stop overspending?

Unlike budgeting apps that only report overspending after it happens, Envelope offers virtual cards and Auto-lock controls that can enforce limits at the point of purchase. If the selected envelope lacks sufficient funds, the transaction can be declined—helping prevent overspending before it happens.

Is Envelope affiliated with EnvelopeBudget?

Envelope (envelopebudgeting.com) is a budgeting app with built-in banking and is not affiliated with EnvelopeBudget (envelopebudget.com), a separate budgeting application.
